Roger Nichols – author, bradcaster, pianist and raconteur

Welcome

Roger Nichols was decorated as Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in 2006 for his 40 years of service to French music.

In that time, he has devoted himself to the study, propagation and performance of French music from Berlioz to the present day, as biographer, historian, editor, broadcaster, pianist and lecturer.

Some of his most memorable experiences have been interviews with French musicians past and present, including Georges Auric, Pierre Boulez, Henri Dutilleux, Véronique Gens, Betsy Jolas, Yvonne Loriod, Olivier Messiaen, Madeleine Milhaud, Maurice Ohana, Georges Prêtre, Manuel Rosenthal, Henri Sauguet, Alexandre Tansman, Debussy’s step-daughter Dolly de Tinan, and Iannis Xenakis.

These people, their memories, and their passionate engagement with music have helped to energise his own.

His over-riding ambition has always been to help French music to be heard, known and loved throughout the world.
